Forks Up and fear not

As the fall 2024 semester draws to a close, Arizona State University gears up for a new spring semester. For many students, this marks a significant transition as they leave home for the first time, embarking on journeys that range from short drives to cross-country moves. The shift from high school to college can be daunting, but it's a shared experience where no one walks alone.

Current ASU students generously offer their insights and advice to assist incoming students through this pivotal phase. They emphasize that while the journey may pose challenges, it also presents thrilling opportunities for personal growth and new adventures.

A vital resource for students residing on campus is the community assistant. Neuroscience major, Tiara Fudukawa, underscores their role, describing CAs as invaluable for seeking advice while adjusting to dorm life.

"Living with peers who share similar majors fosters a supportive academic environment," Tiara noted, highlighting the bond that forms through shared educational pursuits.

Tiara finds immense fulfillment as a Sun Devil, attributing it to the university's vibrant community. Her role as a desk assistant has enhanced her communication skills and broadened her social circle.

"ASU is such a huge place that making friends and connecting with people happens naturally," she said.

Establishing healthy routines is another cornerstone of college life that Tiara prioritizes. She stresses the importance of staying active amidst ASU's sprawling campus.

"Walking long distances every day keeps me physically active and boosts my mental well-being," Tiara explained. She also points out the abundance of clubs, events and daily activities that enrich student life.

Navigating mental health challenges is crucial, and Tiara underscores ASU's robust support system

"Living on campus facilitates access to mentors and leaders who can guide students through various issues," she affirmed.

Whether seeking academic advice or career planning, community assistants and student success coaches are readily available.

Building friendships is a natural progression of the college experience, according to Tiara. She encourages new students to approach others with a smile, fostering a welcoming atmosphere grounded in shared experiences.

She reflected on the universality of new student experiences at ASU.

"Everyone's in the same boat, eager to share their stories and connect,"she noted.

Living on campus also nurtures Tiara's personal growth.

"I've learned to set boundaries and express my feelings more effectively," she shared.

Mastering independence and communication are pivotal lessons gleaned during this transformative period. While adjustments are inevitable, Tiara assures incoming students that navigating them is manageable.

"Embrace the diversity at ASU," she advises, emphasizing the importance of meeting people from various backgrounds. Recognizing the distinctions between high school and college environments is crucial for a smooth transition.

As the new semester unfolds, Tiara offers simple yet profound advice to incoming students.

"Be kind to yourself and prioritize your mental health amidst the workload and opportunities at ASU."

With a supportive community and abundant resources, new Sun Devils can anticipate an enriching journey ahead at Arizona State University. Welcome to ASU and Forks Up!
