Sun Devils raise awareness about domestic violence
Karla Chicaute has always been passionate about being an advocate for domestic and sexual violence prevention. That's why the third-year criminology and criminal justice major with a certificate in domestic violence and evidence-based practice is also a peer educator for the ASU Movement for Violence Prevention
Chicaute said Domestic Violence Awareness Month events and other programs presented by ASU’s Movement for Violence Prevention have a very real impact on students and the community.
“I think it impacts them in such a great way because it spreads that awareness and makes students realize that they have a voice and they can get involved with all the amazing resources that we have,” she said.
October 2019 was National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and ASU students helped raise awareness among their peers regarding resources at dozens of events across ASU campuses. Student-led events that were held throughout the month included Coffee and Self Care, the Clothesline Project art installation and Sun Devil Support Network Training, among many others.
Students at the ASU Movement for Violence Prevention will also present a series of spring semester events: January is Stalking Awareness Month and April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Students interested in becoming involved in the Movement for Violence Prevention or another like-minded organization can check out a range of student clubs on SunDevilSync.
