Sun Devils march to celebrate Women’s HERstory Month

Every March, ASU celebrates Women's HERstory Month with the purpose of bringing together Sun Devils and student organizations to elevate women's voices and to highlight issues impacting women within the university and beyond.

This year, ASU’s Women’s Coalition hosted marches on each of ASU’s four campuses to celebrate Women's HERstory Month.

Multiple student organizations worked in collaboration with the Women’s Coalition to support and celebrate the event, with the goal of empowering women.

Participating student organizations included the Coalition of International Students, Amnesty International, the Asian/Asian Pacific American Students Coalition, the Alliance of Indigenious Peoples and Women in Science and Engineering.

Each year the Women's Coalition chooses a theme to commemorate the month-long celebration. This year’s theme was “her past will lead her future.”

Coalition leaders said the theme was selected with the aim to inspire women of today to look back, learn about and draw strength from the struggles and triumphs of women of the past as they envision the future.

“We wanted to talk about the past and all the oppression women have faced in the past and how that has transformed today,” said Mastaani Qureshi a junior history and justice studies major and co-president of the Women's Coalition.

Because of challenges brought up by COVID-19, the Women’s Coalition decided to host marches instead of its annual block party to ensure that social distancing guidelines could be maintained while continuing the annual Women’s HERstory Month celebration with students across ASU.

“We wanted to connect with our constituents on all four campuses. All the four marches were successful,” Qureshi said.

Other ASU organizations who presented Women’s HERstory Month events and activities included: Undergraduate Student Government, Programing and Activities Board, Changemaker Central and Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness Complex.
